As portrayed by Katey Sagal, Gemma is seen as an extremely protective, sometimes stubborn, tough cookie. She is very loyal to her loved ones and will do anything to protect them. Throughout the show we witness how protective Gemma is of Jax, and how that sometimes conflicts with her admiration of Clay as the two loves of her life often don't see eye to eye.
Gemma's stubbornness got the best of her in season two when a rival gang member constructs a kidnapping and gang rape of Gemma in order to send a message to Clay. Gemma is in constant strife now because she knows that if she sends this message, Clay will retaliate, but that was what they wanted so she keeps quite about the rape, resulting in several psychological issues for Gemma. Eventually she fesses up to Clay and Jax about the events that took place, and the two worked together to resolve the current issues. Later in season three, Gemma finds herself on the run after being set up for a murder that she didn't commit, due to a by a crooked ATF agent who is constantly out to get the club. Struggling with the fact of being away from her family, Gemma plans to meet with the ATF agent to turn herself in on a bargain deal. Unfortunately things didn't work out well for Gemma as she discovers while being away her grandson was kidnapped. After finding this out, Gemmas heart goes on her and she ends up in a hospital which wasn't the 'deal' the ATF agent agreed upon. Eventually Jax works out a secret deal with the ATF agent and Gemma is eventually a free woman again. Gemma often finds herself in between two choices or situations throughout the show. As a viewer we see how her tough attitude and loyalty to those she loves becomes a strength for her in making decisions, but is also often a weakness for her as others use these attributes to manipulate her. In the end Gemma always pulls through, as she has been in the club for a long time and has thick skin.
